The next Buddha will not take the form of a person. The next Buddha will rather take the shape of a community, a community that practices understanding and loving kindness, a community that practices a way of conscious living. This may be the most important thing for earth’s survival.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
Community Agreements
Every circle, of every class, is an active co-creation of a container. We all contribute to the strength and sanctity of that container. We support each other by holding the following community agreements in action.
We welcome all: races, abilities and differently abled, languages, ages, sizes, religions, gender identities, and sexual orientations.
We are adults responsible for our own well-being.
We respect each other’s bodies and boundaries.
We dance barefoot, in grippy socks, or in dedicated indoor dance shoes.
We dance with our eyes open, with awareness of each other in the space.
We participate. We do not spectate.
We communicate through movement, not words.
We do not take photos or video.
We are aware that our sounds and actions might be activating for others. We do not scream.
We arrive with a clean body and clothes, as some are sensitive to any scented products (including essential oils) or strong body odors.
Be clear minded. We dance free of alcohol and illegal drugs.
We arrive on time and stay for the entire class.
Sliding Scale
I’m a first-generation immigrant, a person of colour, a woman, a parent of a child with exceptional needs. Immersed in a socially and politically aware childhood, I was raised on three continents. I’ve been in places of extreme privilege and of systemic injustice. I know a few perspectives. I continue to learn about many more and their intersections. I offer a sliding scale of tuition to make my offerings more accessible while making a sustainable living. My sliding scale is informed by my work in consensus-based decision making, the perspectives of my fellow teachers Majero Bouman and Layah Jane Singer-Wilson, as well as The Catalyst Project. I work through reality to equality to equity to justice and hope to remove the systemic barriers that cause injustice in the first place. I believe that how I do one thing is how I do all things, and I understand I’m a work in progress.
